Top with the dry cake mix and then drizzle the melted butter or margarine over the top. Cover and let it do it’s thing for 2 1/2 to 3 hours on low. DO NOT OPEN THE LID. Every time you open the lid you are releasing heat and moisture. Increasing the dryness and the cook time.

I bet you didn’t know that you can bake bread in a crock pot. It is very easy, and totally doable, and totally flexible. You could use a frozen bread dough, homemade bread dough, make rolls, or make a loaf. You are going to want to line your crockpot with parchment paper and use an amount of dough that is proportionate to your crockpot.

We are getting ready for a move, so my smaller crockpot is packed. I used my large crockpot for this recipe, and the bread turned out a little flatter than I would have liked, but still tasted amazing!

Give this a whirl, you will be surprised at how it turns out. Just remember…DON’T LIFT THE LID while it is baking! Doing so releases the moisture/heat and increases baking times by around 20 minutes each time.

I am always looking for a new crockpot recipe. Chicken is one of the healthiest meats out there. I love that you can throw it in the crockpot still frozen also. That really cuts down on my prep time, and let’s face it. I always forget to pull it out of the freezer to defrost it. This recipe is very fresh and can be served over pasta, rice, or even with mashed potatoes. If you prefer the freshest ingredients you can even make this Homemade Pesto instead of using store bought. This recipe tastes FABULOUS!

How much should I fill my SlowCooker?

A Slow Cooker should be at least ½ full to ¾ full for best results.

Do I need to pre-brown my meat?

The answer is no. You don’t have to. However, if you choose to it will eliminate some fat from your recipe, and add to the flavor of the dish.

Can I add Frozen Meat to the Crockpot?

Yes, you can add frozen ingredients and meat to the crockpot. You will want to increase the cooking times accordingly. Typically by atleast 2 hours.

How to convert cook times between “High and “Low

Below is a conversion chart if you need to change a recipe from “High” to “Low” and visa versa.

While I know crockpotting is considered one of the easiest cooking methods around. There are still ways to mess it up. So, I decided to start a Crock Pot Cooking 101 Series to kinda give you some Tips & Tricks on the best ways to use your crock pot or slow cooker. This week we are covering some basics.

THE BASICS

When buying a slow cooker look for one with a removable crock. You can thank me later.

The Low setting on a slow cooker is about 200 degrees F and the High Setting is about 300 Degrees F. Depending on the age and the brand of the slow cooker this can vary considerably. Become familiar with your slow cookers temperatures.

One hour on HIGH is equal to two hours on LOW.

A Slow Cooker should be at least ½ full to ¾ full for best results.

THE MOST IMPORTANT

PAY ATTENTION! This is the reason so many people feel that crockpot recipes fail!

***DO NOT lift the lid to stir***

Each time you lift the lid, enough heat will escape that the cooking time should be extended by 20 minutes to half an hour. To check progress without lifting the lid, spin the cover until the condensation falls off. Then it’s easy to see inside.

Stay tuned for more Crock Pot Cooking 101 tips!
